How to Prepare Pallets for Export from Fort Worth?

Most Fort Worth businesses sourcing commercial pallets in Dallas-Fort Worth don't think about export compliance until they're already staring down a customs hold. International shipments carry strict requirements for wood packaging materials, and a pallet that clears a Texas-to-California run without issue won't pass inspection at a port in Germany, Japan, or Australia. Working with certified pallet experts before your freight moves keeps you clear of delays, replacement costs, and the frustration of resolving a compliance issue on a tight export schedule.

What ISPM-15 Requires and Why It Applies to Your Pallets

ISPM-15 stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. It's the global regulation that governs how wood packaging materials, including pallets, crates, and skids, must be treated before they're used in international trade. The regulation exists to prevent wood-boring insects and plant pathogens from spreading across borders inside raw lumber.

The requirement is specific. Wood must be heat-treated to an internal core temperature of at least 56 degrees Celsius and held at that temperature for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. Pallets that go through this process are marked with the official IPPC stamp, which identifies the country of origin, the manufacturer, and the treatment method. Port inspectors at the destination country look for this stamp on every piece of wood packaging in a shipment. If it's missing, the shipment can be held, returned, or destroyed, and the cost of that outcome falls on the exporter.

Over 180 countries participate in the IPPC framework, including the EU, China, Japan, Australia, and Canada. If your Fort Worth business ships to any of them, your pallets need the stamp before they leave Texas.

The Difference Between Standard Pallets and Export-Ready Pallets

Standard wood pallets are built for domestic freight. They're Grade A, structurally sound, and compatible with all standard handling equipment in a DFW warehouse. What they don't carry is ISPM-15 certification, because domestic shipments don't require it.

Heat-treated export pallets go through the full treatment process during production. The treatment is applied to the lumber before the pallet is assembled, and the IPPC stamp is branded directly onto both sides of the finished pallet. That stamp stays on the pallet through its entire service life. You can learn more about how heat treatment works in our guide to what heat-treated pallets are and how ISPM-15 applies.

For buyers ready to order, our heat-treated pallets are available in standard 48x40 and custom dimensions, with no minimum order.

How to Check Whether Your Existing Pallet Stock Qualifies

If you're working from an existing pallet inventory and considering routing some of it toward an export shipment, check each pallet individually for the IPPC stamp before loading. The stamp should appear on at least two sides and will show a two-letter country code, an identification number for the manufacturer, and an abbreviation for the treatment method. "HT" stands for heat treatment and is the designation you need for ISPM-15 compliance.

If your pallets were ordered for domestic use, they almost certainly don't carry that stamp. Mixing compliant and non-compliant pallets on a single international load doesn't offer any protection. Customs at the destination port checks every pallet on the shipment, not just a sample.

Getting the Dimensions Right for Export Freight

Standard 48x40 pallets work for most freight configurations, but not all of them. Industrial equipment, large fabricated components, and products with unusual base footprints may need a pallet built to a different specification. A load that overhangs a standard pallet creates stability problems inside an ocean container or an air freight hold.

We build custom heat-treated pallets to any dimension with no minimum order. If your export freight doesn't fit a standard footprint, that's a problem we can solve before the shipment is booked. We also build custom wood crates for specialty freight that needs full structural enclosure, also with ISPM-15 heat treatment available. Take a look at our other popular pallet sizes and configurations if you're weighing standard alternatives before committing to a custom build.

What to Do With Pallets After an Export Run

Once your freight has landed, you're often left with pallets that have come back from the port or cycled off a previous run. If those are 48x40 pallet cores in reasonable structural condition, our Pallet Buyback Program will purchase them. We pay in cash or apply the value as credit toward your next pallet order.

For large surplus volumes, we can arrange drop trailer logistics at your Fort Worth facility. Smaller quantities can be dropped at our Dallas location directly. It keeps your floor space clear and puts the value of used inventory back into your supply chain rather than into a dumpster.

Why Working With a Local DFW Manufacturer Makes a Practical Difference for Export Orders

National pallet suppliers can supply heat-treated pallets, but they're designed for high-volume contract accounts, not for Fort Worth businesses that need a 30-pallet custom run for a first international shipment. We have no minimum orders on any product, including heat-treated custom builds.

We're a member of the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA), which means our manufacturing process meets defined industry standards, not just our own internal guidelines. Our BBB A+ rating reflects the accountability we bring to every order. As Davis, one of our customers, noted: "Helped our team when desperately in need for custom size pallets. Lead time within 48 hours!!" That 48-hour standard applies to heat-treated orders as well.

Export Pallet Checklist Before Your Freight Leaves Texas

Before confirming your freight booking, run through this list:

  • Every pallet carries the IPPC stamp on at least two sides
  • The stamp shows "HT" as the treatment method alongside a valid country code
  • All pallets were sourced specifically as ISPM-15-certified, not pulled from domestic stock
  • Pallet dimensions match the freight footprint to prevent load shift in transit
  • No visible structural damage on any pallet in the load
  • Heat-treated crates or skids are in place if any non-pallet wood packaging is part of the shipment

If anything on that list doesn't check out, resolve it before the freight moves, not at the terminal.

FAQs About Export Pallets From Fort Worth

Does every international shipment from Fort Worth require heat-treated pallets?
If the destination country participates in the IPPC framework, yes. That includes the EU, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico (for certain goods), and over 180 other countries. For domestic US shipments, standard pallets are sufficient. For anything crossing an international border, ISPM-15 certification is required on all wood packaging materials.

What happens if my pallets fail the customs inspection?
Port authorities at the destination can hold the shipment, require pallets to be treated or replaced on-site at the importer's cost, or destroy the non-compliant materials. The resulting delay and expense fall on the exporter. It's a risk that's not worth taking when certified pallets are available with a 48-hour turnaround.

Can I order export-compliant pallets in a non-standard size?
Yes. We produce ISPM-15-certified heat-treated pallets in any dimension, not just the standard 48x40. There's no minimum order, so a small custom export run is available at any volume.

How quickly can we get heat-treated pallets for an upcoming shipment?
Standard turnaround is 48 hours from order confirmation. If your export timeline is tight, reach out and our team will confirm availability based on current production volume.

Does ISPM-15 apply to wood crates and skids as well as pallets?
Yes. The regulation covers all wood packaging materials used in international trade, including crates and skids. We produce heat-treated crates and skids as well, all built to ISPM-15 standards with the IPPC stamp applied during production.

Is there a minimum order for heat-treated export pallets?
No. We have no minimum order requirements on any product, including heat-treated pallets. A first-time export run of 10 pallets gets the same production process and final inspection as a recurring 500-unit account.

Can I sell back pallets that return from an export cycle?
Yes, through our Pallet Buyback Program. We purchase used 48x40 pallet cores in good structural condition. Payment is in cash or credited toward your next order. Reach out to describe what you have and we'll confirm pricing.
